You will agree with me that, when you first bought your computer, it was working on its optimal performance. But then, as time goes by, the system starts to slow down, the response takes longer that it used to be.
And sometimes it feels like nothing is happening for a while before you see some activities on your requests. So her are some tips on how you can improve your computer’s performance.
- Uninstall the programs that you don’t use. These programs take up hard drive space, and they can slow down your system. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features for Windows Vista).
- Remove unnecessary startup items. These are the applications that runs as soon as you start up your computer, and some of them you are not using at all, so by letting them run on the background, they eat up your memory and processor resources, as a result your PC performance is affected. To do this; Click Start > Run. Type msconfig in the text box. Press Enter or Click OK, Select the “Startup” tab from the opened Dialog box. You will see an entire list of programs and services that load when you start your PC. Uncheck any of the programs that you don’t need. Click “Ok” and when a pop-up shows up click restart so the changes can take place.
- Run Disk Cleanup and Disk De-fragmentation tools on a regular basis. Both tools can be found in Start – Programs – Accessories directory.
- It would be wise to upgrade you computer memory if it is small, but for this you need to consult a technician, who will determine what type of memory module is suitable for your computer, and if your computer real need a memory upgrade.
- You might also need to get rid of the Windows Boot Logo that shows up when you start your computer. This logo can take up a few additional seconds to load, and therefore increase your startup time. Go to “msconfig” as explained above. Click the “Boot” tab and place a check next to “No GUI Boot”.
- Optimize the use of advanced graphical settings for your desktop. Go to Control Panel. Double-click System. Click the Advanced tab. Then click Settings from Performance area. A new window will show up. Place a check next to “Adjust for Best Performance”. Then click Apply and Ok.
- Make sure to run a Virus scan on regular basis, because viruses can often slow down your computer or even cause some operation not to function at all. If you do not have a Virus Scanner program then try to use free scanners like AVG, AVIRA these are free and they do a good job for that.
Make a habit of arranging your files in good order, this is for your own convenient, and run fragmentation tool if possible on weekly basis. You might need to run virus scanner when you don’t use the computer, because during this process the computer will be slow to respond, because the scanning takes up lots of your computer resources.
Hope this will restore the life of you computer to serve you the way it should.

Hey Mwandulabi,
Memory upgrade is not always necessary to do, because most computers comes with enough memory for their use, but in case you are running some memory hungry applications, such as games or or graphics or video editing applications, you might need additional memory to accommodate them, now if you are a tech guy, you could refer to your motherboard manual to see the type of mother board and types of memory modules supported, if not, then you should consult a technician for that.
Hope this helps.
Regards.
