Video on a News paper
Imagine, if you could hold a piece of paper and on it is a web page you are browsing or looking for a map to go to a nearest shop. Actually, that piece of paper is a computer screen.
Or, what about when you are looking at a weather map of your country and you see the temperature prediction printed on a magazine. But this information is not live and in some places weather can change abruptly in a matter of minutes. Now imagine this news paper being able to show you updated or real time updates of weather from a location you are or interested to. How cool would that be?
Imagine you are watching a picture of a sport event on a magazine which you never got a chance to watch it live. But immediately after you start reading about this article, you get the updates on the same image and shows you different highlights of that event.
Lets get back to reality here, all these stuff I have been talking about here, seem to be one hell of a fiction movie scenery, We only see these in Hollywood movies.
If can tell you that, you can play a game on a piece paper or browse a web page on a piece of paper or even better, a palm of your hand.
SixthSense Device
Now here is a kicker, there is a new prototype of a device called SixthSense that can literary do all the stuff you have read above.
The device which is the handiwork of a group of MIT graduate students has been in development for about a year now, the the students have already patented the idea.
Describing it as a “sixth sense” device does not quite capture what it’s all about. It is more of an organic computer then anything else, yourself being the organic half. Whip your hand out and draw “@” on it, and you are able to check your emails. Some stranger approaches you at a gig, then the projector projects all their pertinent details, name, web, blog etc.
The SixthSense device comprises of a pocket projector, digital camera and visual tracking fiducials which are worn by individual. The devices are being controlled by a mobile computing device which has the software which processes the users gestures/actions. The goal of the projector is to display visual information on hard surfaces; camera goal is to capture and transmit different(hand) user gestures. The software program process different video data streams sent to it via the camera and all the processes is being displayed using the projector.
The user gestures are being recorded by the camera and then transferred to the mobile computing device however in order to recognize different gestures/ objects, the user has to wear visual tracking fiducials which help the mobile computing device recognize different fingers movement and actions.
The SixthSense device supports multi-touch and multi-user interaction.
Although there have been another invention called Snowcorn quite similar to this and the whole idea behind it, so I am waiting for what is coming to consumer hands.
Just take your time and watch the videos you will be amazed by the capabilities of the device called SixthSense. It is a new invention and will revolutionize the way we interact with the real world environment.
